Along these lines, yesterday I asked a group who had lived in the North most of their lives a few questions about the Emancipation Proclamation. They were surprised to learn about the exceptions, of course.

I happened to know that some had supported Al Gore in 2000. With that in mind, I asked how they would have felt if Gore had been elected, then announced on national TV that as of Jan. 1st, 2003, all vehicles which burned gasoline or diesel fuel by presidential decree would be unlawful to own or operate.

Of course Abraham Lincoln did something like that, removing the property rights of American citizens without due process of law. I was pleased that they readily understood the analogy. A dangerous precedent, IMHO.
