James, if any family did fight, it would have been in the area around Pike County Kentucky near the Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia border areas, and the family name was the Pikeville version of Smith or Brown. So it would be very hard to know which side, or both sides, any of the family might have gone. No actual stories prior to WW1 remain in the family however as WW1 and WW2 and more modern wars took a real toll on the men in the family and a lot of knowledge of what went on in the previous generations was sort of wiped out when they all mostly died young. All we have is their names, and those were common as dirt in that area.
