However, I IMMEDIATELY posted those same declarations of cause, so it should be absolutely perfectly clear to anyone, that I was speaking SPECIFICALLY of the editorial, and in general about the DECLARATIONS of Cause, in which, as I said can be found over and over the SELF-IDENTIFYING phrase "slave-holding" states which the seceding states use to call themselves and frame their arguments against their opposition.
They do not call themselves the "anti-tariff states". They do not proclaim themselves as the "anti-federalist states". They do not call for a convention of "states rights" or "property rights" states, they call for, like Alabama requests, a convention:
.. and as it is the desire and purpose of the people of Alabama to meet the SLAVEHOLDING States of the South, who may approve such purpose, in order to frame a provisional as well as permanent Government ....
Clearly to anyone who reads the declarations of cause, and yes, even in some of the actual ordinances of secession, like Virginia's, they themselves claim over and over that what all these seperate states have in common is that they were slaveholding states, in opposition to the non slave-holding states.
Their common cause, in their own words and documents, was the matter of slavery.
