a. The 14th amendment says no state shall...deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. Equality due to race is a legislative act, and therefore is regulated by Congress who can legally discriminate people by race by law. In other words minority races can be favored over majority races in some cases. The Supreme Court has ruled on this. Civil Rights is not specifically protected by the Constitution, it depends on the circumstances.
b. Slavery is not fully abolished....Reread the 13th amendment- it states....
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
Slavery is protected by the Constitution for Congress' use when used as a punishment.

"Modern day CSA admirers are not proud of slavery, and it is minimized as a key issue. But they are very proud of black confederates, which they believe tends to support their theories that underplay slavery as an issue at all. Those attitudes shape their historical perceptions in retrospect.
This is a typical mainstream thought, and extremely bigoted as well. I say that either minimized or maximized as a key issue in the 1860 secession debate, most historians get it wrong. Being proud of those who fought in the Civil War has little to do with why any one state, in convention, seceded from the United States.
I can also argue those who do not believe Black Confederate soldiers ever existed, and the South seceded to primarily to protect and expand slavery, have "attitudes [that] shape their historical perceptions in retrospect."

It does if you are forming an argument that ALL Southerners and slave owners had the exact same ideas and opinions. Very many slave owners did not support the Confederacy. Very many anti-slave Southerners did support the Confederacy. I would suggest you look up the history of West Virginia. Formed by slave owning Unionist; the last slave state admitted to the Union, and by a Black Republican. The history of the Civil War is much more complicated than the PBS version.
