During the past twenty years I've been collecting information about Alabama Confederate and militia units. We recently exchanged notes about General Maury's interest in receiving permission to recruit a company of Creoles from Mobile. His note is dated Movember 1863. A least one Mobile company recruited later by Capt. Augustus Brooks included men who are listed on roll individually as Creoles.
In his book, Confederate Mobile, Art Bergeron says something about the attempt to place Creoles in segregated units.
