Relations between Texas Governor Murrah and General Magruder, Commander of CSA troops in Texas, had been strained for a long time by June 1864. It is complicated and Texas citizens had legitimate concerns about the conflicts of interest and controversies. Both sides were Very frustrated. Nonetheless, I also see that referenced correspondence as amusing....

And BTW, when push came to shove, Texans and the CS government united and succeded to defeat yankee invasions along the Gulf Coast at Galveston (Jan. 1, 863) and Sabine Pass (Sept. 8, 1863), Palmito Ranch (May 13, 1865) and elsewhere. And the cotton trade for military supplies was lucrative and highly successful from Mexico to Brownsville to Shreveport, LA and beyond throughout the War.
