IMHO your solution fits quite nicely -- those are terms the Yankees used at that time. It doesn't matter that the 13th Ammendment had not passed yet - the term "freedmen" survived that event. "Contraband" was used before and after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Sometimes we want to draw fine distinctions about issues like this when the easiest and best solution is to use the terms that people used at that time. All you need to do is explain what they meant.
