Thanks for the info David! As for Robert Roberts's unit in the War of 1812 that would be the 1st Regiment Mississippi Militia, Amite County, Lt. Col. Neilson's Detachment of Mississippi Militia. I find that odd because his own father, Abraham Roberts II, had a company in the 7th Regiment (Perkin's Battalion) of Mississippi Militia. Oh well, guess I'll have to seek details on this when I get to heaven and get to ask them, provided we all get there

George Purvis sent me a copy of the young man's service record but although he was discharged in June 1862 I could find no card stating he was in action at Shiloh but found none that said he wasn't. The idea of this teen aged young man marching from Corinth to Pittsburg Landing on a crippled foot with Chalmer's Brigade just kind of got me in the heart I guess.
