Check previous messages concerning General Dabney H. Maury's request to enroll a company of Creoles in Confederate service at Mobile. Secretary of War Seddon's reply clearly states his concern that some Creoles had too much negro blood to be allowed in Confederate service. This correspondence took place in November 1863. Like most Americans north and south of the Mason-Dixon line, Confederates were highly sensitive to issues involving race.
