Alan, this brings a new question. My g-grandfather and his brother were in the 6th Kansas cavalry. Both came from a somewhat abolitionist family. G-grandfather bragged about being a "very fine jayhawker." Since they WERE fighting to free the slaves, does this excuse the jayhawking and the racist attitude that they clearly held in the years after the war?
