But since slavery was still legal in 1861 in the United States, why would we fight against that Government that permitted slavery and want to leave? All the southern states had to do to keep their slaves is remain in the Union and demand that the laws of this nation be follows. Could there have possibly been even the most remotest of possibilities that there was some other reason for the southern states secession?
But that was the problems wasn't it, there was no expectation that the Northern states would follow the laws of the land was there?
