I agree, except with the gap between the rich and poor. There was at one time an attempt to refere in the South that the war was a "Rich man's war poor mans fight," and that somehow only poor whites were the only ones fighting in the war. Course men like Gen .s Gordon and Lee set them straight on that subject. Even though the South did practice the use of "Substitutes', consciption in the war, it was considered socially unacceptable and was looked down upon on those who did, Rich or poor. Now maybe I'm wrong but I don't remember too much being written concerning the "Draft" or in response to northern troops referring to the war as being a "Rich man's war, poor mans fight" on a social level.. Of course, I 've heard similar things said like that today.
There was a 1900s questionare in Tenn. that asked former Confederates if they felt that they were treated differently by their wealthy Planters neighbors I found interesting. Sorry didn't mean to get off topic..
