In regards to the perputual union aspect, no, they did not cite specific cases. However, the language is similar to that of earlier opinions such as McCulloch v. Maryland. Prior to the issue being raised in Texas v. White, no case had called on the court to rule on the specific issue of the legality of secession, although earlier cases had addressed the relation between Federal and State sovereignty.
