Re: ATTN: George Martin
In Response To: ATTN: George Martin ()

James,

Thanks for the grand missive. Take me a few days to digest as I'm recovering from a drive to and from San Diego the last three days to
attend the Navy bowl game.

And a very Merry Christmas to you.

For your information, John Crawford Vaughn, former High Sheriff from Monroe County, was a witness to the shelling of Fort Sumter, later raised the 3rd Tennessee Infantry from East Tennessee. Later Brig. Gen. of Vaughn's Brigade, first as Infantry, later as Cavalry. Following Vicksburg, he wrote Jeff. Davis requesting his brigade be mounted, Longstreet opposed, Davis granted the transfer. Vaughn's brigade wound up serving in the Cavalry escort to Davis on his flight south to Georgia.
Vaughn served with Jeff. Davis during the Mexican war and formed a lasting friendship. I've lost the source of this information.

Lincoln removed Vaughn from his position of Postmaster, Monroe County, early in 1861.
