Re: "O Holy Night" - Antebellum Christmas Song

Alan, I find that many, if not most, Christmas carols are sketchy when it comes to acutally being scripturally accurate. Take for example all the carols where angels are singing. Example... "Hark the herald angels sing". I can only find one example in the Bible where angels have been recorded as singing. The story of the Nativity clearly says in Luke 2 verses 13 and 14...

"...Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

If anyone is curious the only passage I have ever been able to see where angels sang is Job 38 verses 4 through seven gives it in context....

Job 38
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?

Tell me, if you understand.
5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!

Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 On what were its footings set,

or who laid its cornerstone—
7 while the morning stars sang together

and all the angels shouted for joy?

Even the the term "morning stars" is used as well as the term "angels". Perhaps even then there is a difference. The point is this. I think everything about the life of Christ has been used to some degree by well meaning people to advance their own views and even political agendas. Did not Lincoln himself speak about this when he spoke of both sides praying to the same God? further stating that both sides could be wrong but both couldn't be right. He said something like "God can't be for and against the same thing". I think Mr. Lincoln was over simplifying the idea. God was perfectly capable of saving souls north and south during the war and I he believe he did. We should never limit God's power in our views. But from a political perspective I believe Mr. Lincoln was to an extent.

Maybe this all shows we all need a reminder of why we have a Holy Day called Christmas. Maybe we need to learn to leave politics (and commercialism) out of it.

P.S.... Don't get me started on the three wise men and the time of their visit LOL!
