The main article was about the American Zouaves, and primarily the Southern. The purpose of the Zouave is very interesting and I believe over-looked and not mentioned, and that is that the Zouaves were light infantry, quick, nimble and athletic to be able to out-flank the enemy in quick lightning advances and skirmish with the advancing enemy. Those baggy pants are almost like todays infantry pants; the boots supported by ankle leggings were made for running. The short unbuttoned jacket is made so the soldier could raise his arms easily to climb over obstacles like walls, and open at the neck to allow for heavy breathing.
