Civil War still divides Nation.

A Dec 31st AOL news story starts out with the headline "Civil War still divides nation 150 years later".

Now a person of thought would have to ask, why would that be? Why would a historical event 150th years in the past still elicit such debate and division? If the cause of that War was to free or keep enslaved a people, why would there be such a division of thought, after this period of time? Wouldn't the question of the morality of that issue be settled by this time?

Well the truth is that the morality of that slavery issue HAS been settled a long time ago and there is no debate on that matter. BUT, the real cause of that War is still a point of debate to this day and still cause a division in the politics of our times, because that debate has never been satisified as to the powers of government over its people.

The article outlines the debate as being 'Slavery vs States Rights', and wonders why anyone would still defend the practise of slavery. But the real debate was not slavery, it was really just 'States Rights'. To get rid of Slavery the federal Government deminished the rights of states to direct their own destiny and placed the states in a subserviant role to that federal Government. And that is the reason we still refight that cause and that War in the halls of debate.
