There were escaped slaves in Texas, but they must have generally been smuggled on ships. There really was no where safe to go. Hostile Indians and bandits to the north and west; Mexicans to the south. While the Mexican government refused slave extradition agreements, they did not welcome black immigrants. Sound familiar? Like Edward said, the thought of finding the next meal would be daunting enough without the perils of being apprehended...or worse.
