Abner Doubleday

Well, from the documents and research I have so far been able to gather, it looks like Captian Abner Doubleday of Fort Moultrie was not well liked by his fellow officers. In fact, I can only discribe him as the "Major Frank Burns" of M.A.S.H. fame of Fort Moultrie. His conduct as second in command of that Garrison in 1859 is as Lt. Lillinghast put in his court-martial he had "no language at my command to describe". He spyed on his fellow officers, even in their private conversations within their quarters and attempted to impress others to spy for him just to forward such information to his superiors at Head-quarters. This conduct would continue through to Gettysburg when Doubleday was fired and sent to Washington by Meade. Doubleday would try to pin the lable "copperhead" on General Meade and smear his name.

Then there are the secret letters to A. Lincoln in September of 1860.
