On this date 150 years ago, William H. Seward, secretary of state-designate, was the recipient of a letter from Lincoln in which the latter stated, "I am inflexible" in reference to extending slavery in the territories.

Meanwhile, with a vote of 166-7 at the State Convention, Texas seceded from the Union, the seventh state to do so.
