General Jo Shelby and 200 men of his old Iron Brigade and 40 French curaisseurs borrowed from the 82nd Regiment of the Line, displaying their Confederate guidon of a field of red, crossed blue stripes and white stars charged the seige line of 2,000 Juaristas and their artillery from the rear. Shooting, slashing as they approached the gun battery; the defenders scattered and the Americans spiked the guns. With the help of a second wing of 400 French cavarly attacking the Juaristas' front, the siege of Matehuala was lifted.

If the stories in these books are true, what a great movie it would make: the fictional movie "Major Dundee" was a yawner compared to what the Iron Brigade is said to have done in Mexico.
