On this date 150 years ago, Fort Sumter was again the subject of attention as the President summarily dismissed any notions held by South Carolina that the United States would give up its' jurisdiction over the fort. Meanwhile, the Peace Convention attempted to arrange a settlement of differences between the secessionists and those that wished to uphold the Union. Speaking to the delegates, John Tyler indicated that "the eyes of the whole country are turned to this assembly, in expectation and hope."

That same day, at Montgomery, Alabama, plans proceeded for the establishment of "a Confederacy of the States which have seceded from the Federal Union",according to Christopher Memminger of South Carolina. Memminger was destined to be the Confederacy's Treasury Secretary.
