Using Doubleday as a source may in fact be questionable. But as Granny use to say, "the proof of the matter is in the pudding". The fact that the columbiads were mounted as mortars and the shot was sent throught the the Moultrie House window and that Doubleday was upset because of the lack of southern casualties would make, I think, a reasonable person believe that there was at least some intent to inflict civilian casualities and not direct their counter fire totally at military targets.

I have a feeling that Major Anderson was a far more politically astute person than was Abner Doubleday. That Anderson objective was simply to goad the Southerner to fire the first shot for whatever reason. But Doubledays intent was pure malice.

Are you suggesting that Doubleday was working behind Anderson back in much of these preparation?
