Stan; I never referred to Sgt-Major Fleetwood as being a "winner" of the M.o.H. I said, "His valor in being AWARDED the Congressional Medal of Honor seems to be well documented and one of the AWARDS which was HONESTLY WON and DESERVED."

Now you may take that the phrase 'Honestly Won' may imply that he was a 'Winner', but in the context of the entire statement you should be able to see that I was referring to the fact that Sgt Major Fleetwood evidently did do something that was ACTUALLY valorious to recieve his award as opposed to those hundreds who were given the same award for doing nothing more valorious than picking up a Confederate battle flag off the ground from the hands of its dead bearer after the battle was over.

Second; I did refer to the practice of saluting the M.o.H., and therefore its recipiant, as a "custom" and not a law, and wonder if that was the custom of the time. I will bet that it wasn't the custom of the time of Sgt-Major Fleetwood, and I will bet that it has not been the custom to salute a BLACK recipant of the Medal of Honor until our time. Nor any of the other customs now attached to the M.o.H.
