I watched a biobraphy yesterday on Eugene Sledge, the writer of "With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa" and subject of HBOs "The Pacific". Born and raised in Mobile, Ala. the program showed many family photographs and many of him as a teenager in the 1930s. What impressed me is of the photographs of him dressed as a Confederate sniper, sitting up on the limb of a pine tree taking aim with a musket; or with his friends re-enacting the civil war at Spanish Fort, Ala.; Southern boys never change.
