A further note:
Up until 1860, most U.S. armories in Southern states remained relatively empty and stocked with arms which had been gathering dust for some time. Following the Harpers Ferry attack in October 1859, the Secretary of War was beseiged with demands from Southern governors for arms to be sent to U.S. armories in their states. Most of the arms transfers to Southern states came from armories at Springfield and Watertown. We might speculate as to how much resistance could have been offered to the Federal government if these arms had not been shipped south just before the war.

For Pam's purposes, it might be well to state that although arms were distributed among the states for defense of individual states, these were U.S. armories, not state armories. Each state had its own armory or armories.
