Anyone know of a contemporary source for terms such as affair, skirmish, combat, action, engagement and battle? Question arose due to a Kentucky Message Board post about a three-hour fight at Bardstown KY. The conflict involved major elements of five to six cavalry regiments, three on the Federal side, plus at least two Confederate regiments. Several wounded on the Confederate side (fewer then ten), one man later dying of injuries, and several captured. No official reports of this "battle" were ever filed. We are informed that Marcus J. Wright reports the fighting as a "battle".
