The caption reads "4th regiment ... European Brigade, Confederate Army... from a picture"

I am aware that this was probably printed in a northern publication such as Harpers Weekly and the caption may have been a total fabrication. But what if it wasn't? What if it was factual?

Obviously this must have been an early unit of the A.N.V. It would be nice to identify this regiment and Brigade. While I was aware of many soldiers in the Confederate army of European decent and other ethic orgins in the Confederate service, I wasn't aware of a "European Brigade" in the Confederate army. This captions gives the impression that these were possibly 3,000 to 4,000 non-americans in Confederate service in this brigade.

Also I am not aware of the picture from which this illustration was reportedly made from. Many such photograph have long since been lost to history.
