What made Ft's Jefferson and Taylor all of a sudden so important? If a "rowboat of pirates" could take them, well, guess they weren't really all that big a deal------until they may have become a stop off for blockade runners? A hidey hole for contraband? Their ammo stores wouldn't have lasted too long if the Confederates did take control of them. BUT--think about smaller vessels, like the local bay boats running contraband from either Jefferson or Taylor into the many bays and inlets that are all over the Florida coast. It would have been difficult and it is quite a stretch to think on it but the goods could have been transported upland into Georgia. They ran herds of cattle. If they'd had anything else that was needed, I'd think they could have found a way to at least try it.
Maybe that was why there was concern about the 2 forts that except for Dr Mudd residing in one of them, most people have never heard of.
