I'd think the Germans and others who were in the Union Army and not US citizens were considered soldiers. At that time, the US Government did not consider Native Americans citizens. If they did, they sure did treat them in a different manner. Not real flattering on the Gov's part either.
The argument at first was the name. "Sons". I cannot see why that is a question for discussion. As with any war, there is a group of 'Vets' who served in the conflict. Then, the "Sons" when the Vets were fading away. It is Gender based. Nothing more or less. UDC? Daughters, then down the Grand line. Like Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. It was started to keep the gender's various
remembrance duties seperate. Now, it might be worth thinking on combining the two.
If he likes picking apart words, maybe he should start with Union. Seems there was a number who 'DisUnioned', so was the Union less than it was before they left? Confuse the dude and then ignore him.
