To me, the most remarkable thing about this soldier is that he was well into middle age and exempt from Conscription when he enlisted and also when he was KIA for that matter. With that demographic alone, there is no doubt that he had strong patriotic feelings. He could have served in a non combat role or sat out the War and that would not have been dishonorable.
