Re: Fort Sumter Reenactment
In Response To: Re: Fort Sumter Reenactment ()

This subject is something that has concerned me for a long time. I want to encourage people to honor our ancestors, even Union veterans, but I will have no more business with people who want to participate in quasi-military ceremonies (e.g. grave marker dedications), but are unwilling or incapable of reasonable research to the point of some semblance of authenticity. Some may get angry with me and I do not care. I have seen too many men/boys carry hawkins rifles, wearing cowboy boots, pressed pants, modern cowboy hats, gunslinger holsters, buckskins, ad infinitum. The inadequate study/practice of correct period military protocol (botched rifle salute in the video) is just as frustrating. The occassional lack of reverence is sometimes more subtle and sometimes apparent, like the "fella" I spoke about earlier. If there is not going to be any standard at all, then let's just wear modern clothing, drop the faux military impressons, and be honest with these long deceased heroes.
