Another thought is there may have been some born in or from the Middle East but the original country was unclear so they were lumped into a catagory the compiler may have thought would be understood (but isn't). I know my BFF's hubby isn't too keen on anyone knowing he had a GGrandmother who was from Lebanon or somewhere around it. She was said to be a "Princess" and no I am not making this up. I'm thinking more Rom than real royalty. Gypsy's did and do exist. Her husband is said to have placed a clean napkin or cloth on the chair before she sat at the table. You're not gonna believe it but they were in the Mobile area. There's a swamp with BFF's hubbys surname and a road with the line the Princess married in to. I'm not bloviating, just trying to explain the way it happens in these 'records'. I've not seen "Gypsy' listed in a census but we know they existed. So there was no real address but those census takers were like dogs on a bone. They wanted to include everyone even the village idiot. Not sure if they were paid by the number of names or just a flat fee. In friends hubby's GGrands case, she was listed as Mrs blah blah. No title or distinction. No place of birth either. That probably bummed her out. Really, how dare they?--
What is the distinction for the Irish who were Native Born and those who came over say 10 years before the war began? Don't really know do we. It's just his word. We don't know just why the 'compiler' was compiling this info. We do know they were grabbing the Irish as they came off the boats to join the Union ranks so the regular Joe Citizen didn't have to.
