I do not believe I have ever seen a better concise (bullet point style) explanation, but I would add something. The fear of an all out insurrection or even a very sudden emancipation of black people struck terror in the hearts of Southerners---all races. How would newly freed, dirt poor, uneducated and generally unskilled black people survive without resorting to desparate means and how would they be able to assimilate into the white society? No one in 1860 had a problem speaking about these concerns, but today, I can be accused of racism for mentioning it. This is just what happened in the aftermath of the War, with the Freedman's Bureau, the disenfranchisement of white voting power, and reactionary politics (e.g. vigilantes, KKK).
