On this date 150 years ago, the difficulties in Baltimore continued to threaten the Federal capital because troops heading for Washington had to go through Maryland.

Jefferson Davis was in communication with Virginia's Governor John Letcher, and hoped that the latter would be able to "sustain Baltimore if practicable."

Cario, Illinois, was garrisoned by state troops.

Arkansas Governor H. M. Rector refused to send troops to support the Union. The Federal arsenal at Fayetteville, Arkansas, was taken by North Carolina state troops.
