On this date 150 years ago, the state legislature of Maryland repudiated secession with a vote of 53-13.

Jefferson Davis spoke at the second session of the Confederate Provisional Congress, explaining reasons for secession. The Confederate leader said, "we protest solemnly in the face of mankind that we desire peace at any sacrifice save that of honor and independence."
