According to the Charleston Mercury, of April 15, 1861. TWO soldiers died due to the explosion of ammunition cassion during Anderson's gun salute after Fort Sumter's surrender. A total of five were injured. One died instantly, a Private Howe, and he was buried in the fort with military honors, attended by the Palmentto Guard. Two of the injured were considered mortal at first, but after being sent to hospital in Charleston, only one of those died, at 10 p.m. of the 14th; the other was recovering.
