On this date 150 years ago, Major Robert Anderson, who had gained national recognition as the commander in charge of Union forces at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, was assigned to recruit troops for the Federal cause. President Lincoln asked Anderson to obtain Union volunteers from Kentucky and western Virginia.

Conflicting sentiments caused a riot at Knoxville, Tennessee; pro-secessionists clashed with Union supporters, resulting in injuries and one fatality.
