On this date 150 years ago, both Wheeling in western Virginia, and San Francisco, California, were scenes of pro-Union demonstrations, even though a strong secessionist element remained in the latter area.

At St. Louis, Missouri, the unrest continued. Fights between civilians and the 5th Reserve Regiment resulted in seven more deaths. Eventually, Federal control was restored and the secesssionists slowly backed down.
