Here is where the Confederate States of America was given legal statis under international law. Lincoln would have to abide by international law and fight his war under the laws of nations or face war against Britian and France. Confederate ships were given legal status and allowed entry into foreign ports and POWs treated as POWs and not common traitors, shot-on-sight or hung. Makes one wonder what would have happened had the Queen not recognized the Confederate States legally as a warring belligerant and let the North use all its powers to surpress the "rebellion." It was bad enough even with the recognition.
