Dan Sickles' leg has been on display almost since the date it was amputated in July 1863. It is very famous, as Legs go, and was for many years made part of study for medical practise and treatment of war wounds. Sickle himself did not believe that he would survive this wound and used it for political advantage in testamony before congressional hearings on Meade's conduct of the Battle of Gettysburg.
