You are absolutley right. Records of those in milita units or Home Guard are even harder to find. My ancestor James M. Giles fought for Southern Indepedence with the Templer Lewis Scouts in Eastern TN. He was a descendant of William Branch Giles of Virgina. Giles was forced to kill a Confederate officer in a duel of honor. Giles thought it best to absent himself from the local area. For some reason he wound up with a unionist mounted infantry regiment. 3rd TN Mounted Infantry. Giles was a Leutinant in the regiment and history repeating itself,he killed his commanding officer, Captain James L Pearson. He tried to leave the locale again but was captured. However at his trial he was found innocent by reason of self-defense. Guess he couldn't stop fighting yanks...lol.
