On this date 150 years ago, General John Fremont met with President Lincoln. The two discussed Fremont's upcoming command of the Missouri forces in an area of violent unrest.

At Wheeling, West Virginia, the new legislature convened, having been recognized by the United States.

Federal troops under General Robert Patterson headed for the Shenandoah Valley where they intended to curtail the movement of Confederates toward Manassas, Virginia. At Hoke's Run in West Virginia, Union foeces clashed with rebel troops resulting in a Federal victory.
