On this date 150 years ago, as McClellan occupied Beverly in West Virginia, the Confederate troops retreated from Laurel Hill. To the west and south of that position, another group of Union soldiers, under the command of Jacob Cox, was moving in to meet with rebels in the Great Kanawah Valley. These Southern troops were under the command of the former Virginia Governor General Henry Wise.
