At Carrickford, Virginia, Union troops crushed the Confederate forces of General Robert S. Garnett who was killed in the ensuing battle. McClellan had enabled Federals to take control of the entire area in West Virginia, an important move forward for the Union due to the communications links, including railroads found there. It also provided Union troops a base of operation from which to launch raids into Virginia proper. The number of rebels killed at Carrickford totalled 20 compared to a grand total of 53 lost for the Union.
