Fort Conde in Mobile was made from that fine red clay found there. I guess so is Fort Morgan and Gaines...heck you can go anywhere along the north part of the Gulf without finding clay. My grandmothers property in Eight-Mile, Ala. near the skirmish sight of Whistler, was a saw mill and brick kiln. The yanks captured it in '65. You can still dig up bricks in her yard made during the Civil War.
