Dogs in the war

From "Shiloh: In Hell Before Night" by James Lee McDonough...

"... Waterhouse's guns were captured. E.C. Dawes remembered that the Rebels "Swarmed around them like bees." He said "they jumped upon the guns and on the haybales in the battery camp, and yelled like crazy men." A dead Union officer lay near the guns, and keeping guard over his body was a pointer dog that refused to allow the Confederates to approach the body."

I'm a dog lover and this really touched me. The dog is the only friend man has on this planet that can be kicked in the rear end and still run to you when you call. How's that for loyalty? Can you picture the sight of this dog showing his teeth to the entire Confederate army? It's as if he said about his master "Not while I live".

Now, where's my tissues :-)
