I have read of "negro dogs" being used to hunt down deserters in SE Texas (surely eslewhere as well), but those must have been bloodhounds.

....the informant proudly reported that twenty-four of the men had been captured by forty "reserve corps" who tracked down the deserters with a pack of "negro dogs" .
