On this date 150 years ago, the Crittenden Resolution passed 30-5. The Bill stated that the war was to be fought to preserve the Union and uphold the Constitution, not to alter slavery in its established form.

Missouri remained an area of unrest. Fighting broke out at Harrisville and at Dug Springs. Confederates in the New Mexico Territory clashed with Union troops from Fort Fillmore; the rebels under Captain John Baylor, hoped to press the Federals to leave the Southwest, which would have opened the area to Confederate control. The Union soldiers were able to push the rebels back, however, the Confederates were ultimately successful.
