On this date 150 years ago, grievances among the troops of the 79th New York Regiment provoked mutiny by these volunteers. Among other things, the men had requested and been denied a furlough, which precipitated a reaction that resulted in several arrests and placed the entire unit under armed guard.

Due to the unsettled conditions in St. Loiuis, Missouri, General John Fremont issued a declaration of martial law in that city.
